Flattr extension

Postby m.eik » Sun Nov 07, 2010 4:27 pm

hi,

i'm just making my first steps in writing extensions and would like to have some comments on my second attempt. it creates Flattr buttons on the fly, guessing most of the needed information from an entry. but you can also supply every bit manually, if you're not happy with the guessed results.

you can either use it in each PivotX entry you'd like to be a Flattr thing, or simply include something like

Code: Select all
 [[ flattr uid="your_flattr_username" language="a_valid_language" button="compact" ]]

somewhere in your template and probably configure the CSS class "PivotXFlattr" to position the button. it should then create individual buttons for each of your entries automatically. the initial release can be found here: http://www.reaktanz.de/blog/stuff/flattr_0.1.zip

to see it in action try http://www.reaktanz.de/blog/?e=121 (which also includes my first extension hack to use HTML5 video/audio tags, but that probably needs more work...).

the things i already have on my TODO list are making the Flattr user(s) configuration more comfortable (e.g. assign a flattr user to a distinct PivotX user), and overwriting the template wide settings easily from within an entry (as right now this would just create another new button).

so, what do you think? let me know if you run into problems.

Just some minor comments on your post itself. Not everyone knows about all possibilities on the net. I, for example, didn't know what Flattr is (for those of you who want to know: http://flattr.com/). So a short description could create more attention to your extension. Also the page you link to, to see it in action is a page that's not in english and you have to look for the Flattr part; so an additional pointer to where to look at on that page would be helpful (or an image). You have to be aware that a page that's not in the same language as the site where it's linked from will scare people away and I guess that's not your intention ;)
Quality is in the detail of things............

Want to change or update your PivotX site? Mail or PM me!
I can also convert your site to a Wordpress site!

oh, i must apologize. you're right, i should've linked to flattr.com for clarification. i didn't really explain the service itself here on purpose, though (say, the twitter extension doesn't explain how twitter works either). i think of the extension as being targeted at people who use Flattr already and want to have it in their favourite blog suite, rather than advocating people to learn about Flattr in the first place.

however, i get your point and will improve my announcements next time :-) that said, for everyone: you cannot really try/use this extension without an existing Flattr acount! it will only produce buttons that say "error!" beware that Flattr is not a free (as in "no costs") service, as everyone using it must spend a minimum amount of currently 2 euros per month by flattring other peoples things (if you don't the money will be spent on charity).

i thought language wouldn't matter, because Flattr buttons look the same everywhere. it's merely question of "is there a button?" or not. but surely you're right, since that's again from the point of view of someone knowing the service already ;-)

when i looked at the Flattr integration in other projects (http://flattr.com/support/plugins) i just thought it might be nice to see PivoX listed there as well.

btw, if PivotX had a Flattr button, i'd press it right now ;-)

Has anyone noticed any problems with this plugin insofar as automagically submitting posts to Flattr? I've been playing around with the latest release on my site (and comparing the code the plugin generates to code generated by Flattr's URL submission page), and I've noticed that the plugin doesn't seem submit the article to Flattr. The Flattr API calls look right but something's not acting the way it should. I've been able to work around this by submitting articles manually but that's kind of clunky.

Was this by design (in which case it needs to be documented)?
