Cycleshow

Postby Harm10 » Sat Apr 30, 2011 4:27 pm

Thread for the Cycleshow extension: http://extensions.pivotx.net/entry/50/cycleshow.

An extension that implements the excellent jQuery plugin Cycle.

Creates the possibility to create slideshows of every child element. Not only images but paragraphs and unified lists too for example. In effect all possible html elements.

Many different transition effects and 9 predefined special effects!

Container and cycleshow within the container can be positioned left, center and right (as of version 0.2).

Out of the box easy to use, advanced users can easily customize and superusers can implement any necessary parm.

Because the plugin has a myriad of possibilities and combinations there could be minor issues with this first version. Please don't hesitate to report them. Requests for enhancement(s) are also welcome!

Tested on the popular browsers.

Harm, looks like a great extension. Think I'll use it soon!

Watch out, the link behind "cycle" on http://extensions.pivotx.net/entry/50/cycleshow is wrong. See what I mean?

I've used it on my own site http://www.remark-webdesign.nl/page/chapsumm/remarkwebdesign?chap=Site_voorbeelden as chapter summary page (see also revolving header on same page).
More samples can be seen at http://www.remark-webdesign.nl/page/cycleshow/remarkwebdesign which also contains a link to the page of the core-software maker where you can see more transitions in effect.

OK< so I have installed Cycleshow extension. And I have no idea what to do next. How and where do I tell Cycleshow what images to cycle?

A reminder: I'm pretty stupid when it comes to building websites, so explain it to me like I'm five. Maybe even with screenshots.

And for an idea of what I want to achieve, I see this website has something along the lines of what I want:

http://www.argumentenfabriek.nl/

If you look at their frontpage, you see an image-cycle. The images are clickable and lead to a specific page. I don't want or necessarily need a seperate text column, I'm thinking I can just edit pictures and add text to them - as long as the pictures are clickable, it has the same function.

Thanks in advance!

Like you are five? ;)

The essence is that you first built or create blocks of HTML that begin with the same tag.
You should read the documentation because it contains some samples.
Suppose you want 3 images with accompanying text and links.
Built 3 blocks all beginning with a div. Display the page without cycleshow attached to it. If the 3 blocks display well besides or below each other you can wrap them in the cycleshow.
You can also look at the sample pages I pointed to and study their source code.
This is an extension that needs some thinking and then some work.................... :)

To elaborate on Harm's post a little: I would install the bonusfields extension, and add an image field, so you can attach a picture to an entry (or to a page). Put these entries in a separate category (or, if you choose pages, in a separate chapter). Then put a subweblog in your frontpage template (or a pagelist, if you....well, you get the idea) where you put all these entries in div's that will go into the cycleshow, using the image from the bonusfield for the pictures, and the introduction (and body, maybe) for the text that is displayed. This way you can easily also add a "read more" link that will lead to the entry (or page).
