As the release of PivotX 4 is approaching I assume no one will create such an extension for PivotX 2. I do not know whether this functionality will be incorporated in the new version (the structure is somewhat different and more modern).

Nowadays it is hard to think of websites just using flat file databases. So only the simple and fast approaches can use flat file as good as MySQL. If you want complicated things flat file just isn't enough. You do not have MySQL database available?

PHP 5 comes with SQLite - a flat file database which supports SQL. There is no need for Bolt or Pivot 4 to keep the old non-standard flat file database that was used in PivotX.

So, to make this a short story: You don't need MySQL and a flat file database is supported out of the box - it's just not the same one as in PivotX.
