Postby rabbeltje » Wed May 06, 2009 10:21 am

i was just wondering how hard it would be to sort the thumbnails in my image gallery vertically?

Hi,

I'm not quite sure what you mean.. You can just rearrange them any way you like, right? :-)

well, right now, the thumbnails are sorted horizontally, i mean, they're all placed next to eachother. if i'd have a div in which i display the gallery that is for example 400px wide, it puts each new thumbnail on the right of the previous one. i'd like to have the possibility to have the next image display underneath the previous one :) (if possible!)

Ah, that's not hard to do. Try this:

Code: Select all
<div class='gallery'>
[[gallery]]
  <a href='%imageurl%%filename%' class="thickbox" title="%filename%" rel="gallery-%uid%" >
  <img src="%pivotxurl%includes/timthumb.php?src=%filename%&amp;w=106&amp;h=80&amp;zc=1" alt="%filename%" />
  </a><br />
[[/gallery]]
</div>

this ensures that there's a <br /> between each image, which is what you want, right? :-)

well, yes and no... i think :? i'll have a try before i say anything ;)

well, no. i may have explained it incorrectly though. let me try again and be complete this time ;)

i have a div, that has a fixed height (not a fixed width specifically... sorry!). i want to sort the images vertically, so each new one appears beneath the previous one, untill the full height of the div is full with thumbnails. then the next thumbnail should ideally appear on the next row, so basically beside the very first thumbnail in the gallery. the way it is now, it just does this in a horizontal way: each image appears next to the previous, and when the width if full, the next one appears below the very first. so, if possible, i'd like to have this vertically. with the <br /> tag, they just all appear beneath eachother endlessly...

Ah, like that.

Well, there's a reason _all_ online galleries are layed out horizontally.. That's because that's just the way HTML works. :-)

And, i'm not just saying this, because it'll be hard to implement, but i'd also advise against it, from an usability standpoint. People _expect_ something to work in a certain way. If you change that too much, you'll just confuse visitors, i think.

i'll show you the link where i need this for: www.hkl.cc

for each project, there is a larger main image, and beside that, there are the gallery-thumbnails. because for each project there is a different number of pictures, it would be nicest if they fill up to the height of the main image, and not the way it is now... but if it is really hard, we'll just have to think of another way to achieve something similar.

Other than placing them one-by-one by hand, i don't think there's a good way to make them line up like you want to. HTML just wants to do it horizontally. :-)

Hope you can find a good way to change it. ;-)
