Duplicate URL when a page is used as homepage

Postby xzjia » Sat Apr 23, 2011 6:59 pm

Right now if you use a page as Site Homepage, then you have 2 URL to the same page: http://www.website.com and http://www.website.com/page-used-as-homepage.

That's a problem, esp. for SEO purposes, since it meant that Google sees it as duplicated content.

Of course, .htaccess can be used to do a rewrite, however since the Site Homepage feature is commonly used I feel that this really should be solved internally in PivotX instead of adding yet another rewrite rule to .htaccess

Yes, this is a issue with regards to duplicate content. As you say, you can solve it by a simple rewrite rule in your .htaccess. Or even better, not link to the page URL so the search engines doesn't know about the page. Fixing this isn't top priority for us. You can write an extension fixing it or submitting a patch.

PS! You probably know that if you enable mod_rewrite/clean URLs, PivotX will avoid duplicate content for entry and page URLs. (This is something that for example Drupal doesn't do out of the box - you need to install an extra module for it.)

In addition to Hans' answer: PivotX generates a canonical URL in the <head> section of your HTML:

Code: Select all
<link rel="canonical" href="http://example.org/" />

For these two pages, the canonical will be the same, and Google recognizes these URL's as duplicate, and will list it only once. This is exactly what the canonical URL's are invented for this exact reason. So, this issue isn't really anything to worry about at all.
