Comments disappear in the Bermuda Triangle

Postby verbaljam » Mon Oct 10, 2011 8:55 pm

Maybe developers should be attentive to a possible bug regarding the comment system: sometimes a comment (that has already been posted) inexplicably disappears.
At first I thought it had something to do with the server of my hostingprovider, but I'm talking about a single comment between other comments.
The issue doesn't occur very frequently, but often enough to make users complain. At first I thought they were making mistakes in posting their comment, but that is not the case.

To my knowledge, before version 2.3 this never happenend.

To give you an example (it's in Dutch): http://www.amsterdamcentraal.nl/archief ... aatcoaches
Between comment 9 and 10 originally was a comment that has disappeared now. The comment number 10 of Milena is an answer to the disappeared comment.

I'm using PivotX 2.3

I can't explain it, but I thought I should let you know.

I'm sorry to hear that some of your comments just disappear. I'm a bit surprised this started to happen with version 2.3.0 since we haven't really changed that part of the code. Anyway, let's look at it. First step - which database type are you using?

If other people are seeing this behavior too, let us know in this thread.

Hans, I'm not 100% sure that the problem did not exist before 2.3 version, so better forget this remark.
I made a phpinfo.php for you on the site, so you can check whatever info you need.

I hope this is what you meant.

I just meant whether your site is using MySQL or flatfile database. (You should remove the PHPinfo file - it exposes very much information about your system and hence can be a security risk.)

Hi,

I've never seen this before, but there's another site where this is happening as well. Sometimes a comment disappears, but it's not really reproduceable yet, so i've no idea why. yet. Anyhow, i'm investigating, and will let you know.

Great, Bob, then I can do something else ;-) I'm surprised this problem appear with the MySQL database backend, it would have been a typical flatfile problem ...

It happened again, a comment that I made disappeared on our weblog Amsterdam Centraal.
You can see it here: http://www.amsterdamcentraal.nl/archief ... n.#message

I made and posted a comment to this article (comment #6).

I could make this screendump because I used the backbutton of my browser.
But after going to another page, it was gone.

To illustrate that comment #6 is gone, I made another comment on that location #6.
In the past week I also got reports from other users.
It's becoming a serious problem, I think.

I'm using PivotX 2.3.0 and Firefox 7.0.1

Hi,

I think we've found (and fixed) the issue. I'll patch the install on Amsterdam Centraal later today. After that it shouldn't happen anymore. This fix will also be included in the upcoming PivotX 2.3.2.
