Bullet without category

Postby Frederik » Sat Feb 07, 2009 12:45 pm

phpinfo: http://www.victoriepodium.nl/phpinfo.php
http://www.nieuwsocialisme.nl/phpinfo.php
using: PivotX 2.0 beta 12f, mySQL

Hi, I run two pivots that have the same problem. When I delete a category, a bullet 'stays behind' in the category list. It might have something to do with me trying to delete the Linkdump category or making it invisible, or renaming the default category, but I'm not sure. The bullet that stayed behind on http://www.victoriepodium.nl I think came from a category (Geschiedenis) I made to go with a third weblog I decided I didn't really need (so I deleted it again).

Because I thought it had something to do with the linkdump category (which at first I only made invisible fot this weblog and didn''t delete), I tried deleting this category as well, resulting in two 'empty bullets'. When I added Linkdump again as an invisible category, I was glad to see one of them disappeared again. Then I made the invisible category 'Geschiedenis', but to no avail.

It looks pretty ugly.

I've tried to look for inconsistencies in ser_cat.php and ser_categories.php, which for me is a shot in the dark since I'm no programmer. They seem okay though. I've tried deleting everything in the cache folder, with no results.

I'm hoping there's something I'm missing here and you can tell me what it is :)

Greetings,
Frederik

Re: Bullet without category *UPDATE*

Postby Frederik » Sat Feb 07, 2009 12:59 pm

My darling girlfriend looked in het html-source for victoriepodium.nl and found out the 'empty bullet category' was named 'Vroegah', before I deleted it. This was something I forgot. So, I remade this category, set to invisible, and the bullet disappeared! But now I have this category in the system I'm not going to use.

Of course, I tried the same for nieuwsocialisme.nl, but alas, the sourcefile says this: <li><a href='/?c='></a></li>. I can't make a category with no name, so I can't use the same workaround for this site.

Greetings,
Frederik

You just need to delete the line <li><a href='/?c='></a></li> from the source file

Ehm.. It is generated by

<h3>[[t]]Categories[[/t]]</h3>
<ul>
[[category_list format="<li><a href='%url%'>%display%</a></li>"]]
</ul>

in the template.

I'm viewing the source in Firefox.

I guess this is because you deleted the category, but the weblog is still referering to the category you deleted ... Check the subweblog tab in the weblog config - try to make some changes to update the settings.

PS! If you remove the linkdump category, you probably should remove the linkdump subweblog from your templates.

Hi Hansfn,

Thanks for your answer, but I've tried all that. I took some screenshots to maybe clarify the situation a bit more. These are taken from http://www.nieuwsocialisme.nl. I don't have a problem with victoriepodium.nl anymore since I remade the deleted category and set it to invisible (but as I wrote earlier, I now am stuck with this category I'm not going to use).

For nieuwsocialisme.nl I had already deleted the subweblog 'Linkdump' to see if this would work. This is a picture of the complete contents of the subweblogs tab:

Image

There's no option to make a new subweblog so I'm not able to try and remake the Linkdump subweblog to see if that solves the problem. I'm guessing it won't, though, but I'll get back to that. As you can see here, too, I made the category 'Linkdump' available again, but it's not associated with this (sole) subweblog.

Here you can see I put the Linkdump category to invisible, even though I'm not using it, but just to be sure:

Image

You can also see there's no category other than these three, the two I'm using in the one subweblog and, of course, the invisible category Linkdump I'm not using at all.

But here's the really interesting one:

Image

As you can see here, there seems to be a mysterious 'nameless' category associated with the weblog, which accounts for the empty bullet (and the bit of code I found in the source, looking at the site in Firefox (<li><a href='/?c='></a></li>)). I just don't seem to be able to get rid of this nameless category. This is also why I don't think remaking the subweblog Linkdump might work, even if I could (congruent to remaking the deleted category and setting it to invisible on victoriepodium.nl).

I'm not able to associate or disassociate this 'nameless' category with a (sub)weblog, because it doesn't exist in the categories list.

Thanks for checking this out and greetings,
Frederik

Yes, you have in deed (sort of) tried all that. I could have told you how to remove the ghost category, but since it's a lot of work I found it better to just fix the bug. You were actually bitten by two bugs, and what you are seeing is the linkdump subweblog which isn't properly deleted. (The secong bug is that category deletion doesn't update the list of categories in weblogs/subweblogs.)

You'll find the fix in patch/revision 1734 - follow the "text changed" linked. After applying the fix, the ghost category (or really the ghost linkdump subweblog) should be removed after you visit the weblog config - I don't even think you have to make any changes to the config.

PS!
There's no option to make a new subweblog

because you add/remove subweblog by editing the frontpage template.

Thanks! That did the trick. Had to look for the right file (pivot20_objects.php) and right lines though, but all went well.

And Eureka! about the subweblogs. I had expected a button on the subweblogs page, but I vaguely remembered a caution having to do with making more subweblogs from an earlier version, so I thought you just kept it out or something. Instead I tried using a second weblog.

I had changed the code of the linkdump subweblog on victoriepodium.nl to show the second weblog named 'Agenda' I created (for which there is a button). I thought this worked well but now I know that instead I created the subweblog 'Agenda' in the process.

I came across this subweblog and found it curious, didn't know where it came from. :D

Sorry for the tiresome details, but maybe there's something in there you can use :)

Thank you!
