Cropping Image Script

Hi all,

I know that Pivot always had a tool to crop images, before they were placed (specifically for use in thumbnail creation). Now I'm wondering if Pivot used a specific application for this, or if it was built from the ground up?
I'm actually searching for such a script and maybe the developers here, might point me in the right direction for, already existing, software for this?

Hopefully someone can help out.
