non-ascii characters in tags

Postby kangoo » Wed Jul 02, 2008 8:01 pm

Currently, when a user creates tags, they mustn't use non-ascii chars in tagnames, because non-ascii letters won't appear accurately then. On the one hand, this is normal, especially, if one is using plain text database, so tag files that are stored on server don't have strange chars in their names. On the other hand, it is a bit awkward that tag cloud shows incorrectly written words. Maybe in future releases of Pivot there could be an improvement on this, for example, using the same transliteration function that creates entry links from entry titles?

I'm still not sure how we should best handle things like this. If you think about it, there is no reason why a tag shouldn't contain an é or ø, or even be in another character set than western european, like 'история'.

We'll just have to make sure we can store these without breaking, especially for flat file DB's.

Non-ascii characters in tags might be ok to show on web pages, but could it be transformed into ascii codes (like urlencode()) to save into system file.

Some multibyte language tags, once saved in the virtual hosting machine, can not be removed through FTP client.
