Problem with special characters in filename

Postby Gooly » Mon Jun 18, 2012 7:56 am

To add a popup image to an entry, I used the 'insert popup image' functionality from the (wysiwyg) menubar.
The filename of the image had special characters in it (ü) .
What happened was that the filename was changed to regular characters (u instead of ü), and the text in the popup code lacked the characters, they were just left away.
So,
  • Original (local) filename was:
    rückbau-düsseldorf-5.jpg

  • After adding the popup image, (uploading from local computer) it changed to:
    ruckbau-dusseldorf-5.jpg (Which is correct IMHO)

  • The popup text showed:
    [[popup file="2012-06/rckbau-dsseldorf-5.jpg" description="(thumbnail)" alt="Rückbau Düsseldorf 5" align="inline" ]]

  • The used character set in the templates is utf-8
Am I doing something wrong? Is this a server issue? or is this a PivotX issue?

Of course I know that I can work around it by changing the filename in advance, but since this can also point to something which goes wrong, I decided to ask it here anyway.
That's the trouble with reality,
it's taken far too seriously

I have the problem with German characters (ä, ü) in tags as well as in descriptions within PivotX administration (listing of pages). They show funny questionmarks like this: aufkl+rung. The posted texts however, show the special characters all right. Maybe that helps finding the error.

I recently set up a German site and didn't experience this problem (also not in admin) although the content contains these characters frequently. Are you sure you specified charset=utf-8 in your header? Maybe a link to your site would help? Which version are you on?

Thanks for the hint, but the page http://www.wagniskapitalfonds.de/blog/ shows that UTF-8 is set. You can see on this page the questionmark-signs and a tag that I never wrote "t%EF%BF%BDv". Actually I don't understand much of your software, but where in which header should I look for UTF-8? ("Content" was mentioned somewhere, but is not a category in the German language pack, that would be called "Inhalt")

By the way, the tags can't be written with a first capital letter (in German a lot of words are written with that). That is a pity.

Well according to your page source you are still on PivotX 2.0.0 which is rather old....... so please first install the latest version (2.3.3).
You have the correct meta tag Content with the utf-8 already there.
After upgrading I could have another look.

To keep the tags clean from special characters a special procedure is used (like is used for the internal names of entries/pages). Changing everything to lowercase is a side-effect of that. Indeed a pity....... ;)

Just to repeat what Harm said: 2.0.0 is very old and is not supported.

I actually uploaded the new version 2.3.3 but the templates which I changed a bit in design. Maybe that's why it still shows 2.0 instead of 2.33. Is the text about the version found in the templates?

I don't understand this software, whcih page it starts first, for example. But I know that upgrading is too complicated for me, changing chmod and not knowing which files I should upload without destroying the posts and templates. I need, and others probably too, a manual for upgrading for dummies. Writing in this forum is already difficult for me and though I like your project I on the other hand would like it to be more simple and simply working. I am not a programmer or have anything to do with computers.

http://www.wagniskapitalfonds.de/blog/pivotx/index.php - in the footer: "PivotX - 2.0.0".

Upgrading is as simple as installing - just overwrite the existing installation. (Take a back-up of all files first.) The only pifall is if you have modified the default templates in stead of copying them to different names. If you have done that, upload your modified templates from the back-up after upgrading.

Quote from http://book.pivotx.net/page/1-2
Tip: Upgrading PivotX is identical to installing PivotX except that you can usually skip the file rights step.

The answer to this is NO. If the eyecatcher (like hansfn points out in his link) is on 2.0.0 then that version is active (so your upload of new version 2.3.3 did not result in an upgrade)

If you do exactly the same as on a first install (chmodding is not necessary anymore) then the version becomes active. The content is either in your database of in flat files which are in a different folder that you do not overwrite. So no risk there!
The first page that is started is set in the configuration first tab. For example you can set it to start with a certain weblog.

It is not really that hard................ ;) I could have a brief look if you want me to but then you have to give me access (PM me in that case).
